For Lotus Notes users who wished to have more ubiquitous access to Notes databases (apps) via the then nascent Web.
What A downloadable install that integrated an HTTP server with a Lotus Notes server, thereby allowing that server to talk to a browser in addition to the proprietary Notes client.
Why In essence, Lotus Notes and the Notes client were akin to a proprietary web inside a company; by opening up the capabilities of the Notes server to browser clients we hoped to drive increased usage of Lotus Notes' unique capabilities.
